The first step is to create the main menu used to launch the game. I am just mocking up some temporary textures I made for now, to be replaced with professional textures later. This game is going to take place in a beehive, so the feel should match that setting.
I created some basic widget textures as a stand in until a real artist created some textures. The menu layouts are done and the menu transitions. Two players can play at once, indicated by the two 'Press Start' icons. Each players info is displayed in either top corner and they can drop in and out at anytime while the other player is playing. This should be a familiar interface just like old arcade game used to employ. The spinning green icon should be the familiar 'XBox needs controller input' icon.
The large outer border is the non-title safe area that might be hidden behind the plastic frame of some TVs. The maze behind the menu is just a stand in for now - the actual game maze won't be such a large rectangle.
Here is a small sample of what the menu is looking like so far:
