For music in Beetle Bother, I want something that sounds insecty, but still sounds good. I also play a lot of flash games (market research!) and see that most games tend to have a short music clip that just loops forever. I want to see if its possible to create a music clip dynamically such that it won't sound like a loop.

To play with this idea, I created two separate pieces of music in the same key and octave. If you play these two at the same time, and loop them, you get a composition which can be dynamic if there is a palette of music pieces to play together (assuming they all kind of go together).

The resulting composition is still a loop though. But if the two pieces are different lengths, then looping them won't result in the same music when they loop. If the the lengths are prime, say n and m, the music won't end up sounding the same until time n*m later.

The clips I created are all in the key of C, and notes chosen so that most of the time the two combine to create proper chords and a pretty decent progression. By alternating on 8th notes, it makes it sound insecty.

Here is my test music. Piece one is 7 bars long and looks like this:

And sounds like this (http://madox.ca/mediawiki2/images/5/52/Music2.mp3).

Piece two is 5 bars long and looks like this:

And sounds like this (http://madox.ca/mediawiki2/images/e/e4/Music1.mp3).

This means, when played together it creates 35 bars of unique music. If I had a third peice, say 11 bars long, it would create 385 bars of music. Together, these pieces sound like this (http://madox.ca/mediawiki2/images/7/7b/Music3.mp3).

One great thing I found is that any piece of music can be converted into 'panic mode' music by simply adding a certain kind of echo! Check out the echo panic version (http://madox.ca/mediawiki2/images/4/41/Music4.mp3) of the same composition.
